Chris Macauley

Chris Macauley Landscape artist of the year series 2023
biography

After graduating from art school in Newcastle, Chris worked as a joiner/carpenter on various contracts in the UK while continuing painting. Chris then trained as an art teacher and is currently teaching art and design in Leicestershire. He is a representational painter that focuses on all subjects, has exhibited nationally and internationally in addition to work for McKay Williamson Creative Agency on portrait commissions.

Earlier in his painting career, Chris was very much interested in nonfigurative and abstract painting as well as representational work, and still feels these influences today; this shapes his thinking when it comes to painting: “Expressing light through colour and the arrangement of form are as important as the representation of the scene. I am not a subject specific painter, I am always trying to discover what the painting is about, the object matter is not the subject matter.”
