Craig is an oil painter from Sheffield who paints en plein air in the Peak District.
Craig is an artist and educator with over thirty years experience of painting with oil on canvas following his first class degree with honours in Painting & Printmaking from Sheffield Hallam University in 1986. He has exhibited widely in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire through his membership of the Peak District Artisans. This has extended to several National exhibitions including The NEAC at the Mall Gallery and the Scottish Gallery in London and Edinburgh. Craig has achieved several prizes for his painting in exhibitions, one of which was the SAA Amateur Artist of the Year. He also has many of his original artworks in private collections in the UK, France and the USA.
Craig paints mainly en plein air and favours dramatic, hilly locations with vast panoramic vistas. He uses oil on canvas, applying the colours expressively using impasto technique to describe the forms, shapes and textures in the landscape. Colour is used intuitively to evoke the atmosphere of the environment as well as the topographical reality. The intention being to use paint to ‘discover’ something about the environment, and communicate what it is like to be there at this moment in time in this weather with this varying light.
