Samuel paints in watercolour or oils depending on the subject – is more inspired by the light and mood of the subject than the physical element that is used to convey it.

Samuel paints very quickly without the aid of photos as reference whenever possible – using sketches made on location and memory to achieve a looser, less laboured effect – his aim being to convey a feeling or emotion that the viewer can relate to without worrying too much about the actual subject of the painting. A walk home from school or a trip to the shops for example – typical, every day, English events made special by the light that evokes that nolstalgia.
