The source material for this painting is from a photograph taken at a party and contains a self portrait as the Pierrot, a motif which the artist returns to often in his work. Transposed against a background of a bombed out city the work meditates upon the fragile nature of human existence, youth and pleasure in a reference to the Rococo period and the work of painters such as Watteau and Fragonard.
