On this bright, still day, standing on Llandudno’s Pier, looking back at the solidity of the Grand Hotel and Great Orme, with an awareness of the distant mountains of Snowdonia beyond, I could imagine the ornate Victorian railings dissolving like a mirage, leaving us stranded some 700 metres from safety.
